A bike time trial is essentially a cycle race against the clock. The cyclist is timed over a set distance and competes against other cyclists who all cover the same course, the winner being the person with the lowest time.
Typically cyclists are lined up for the event and leave at one minutes intervals. This means there is no bunching of cyclists or potential for collisions, like triathlon, no drafting (gaining an advantage by sitting in someone elses slip stream) is allowed.
They are a great way to sharpen your bike racing skills in preparation for the triathlon season, good chance to test out new bikes and other cycling equipment.
The distances vary, last year all of the trials were made up of a 14km loop on the Rosses Point road and saw good turn outs. The Time Trials are Club Training Events and only open to members. There are typically a number of trials and the best 4 or 5 taken for points purposes.
Keep an eye on the website for entry to the 2012 Time Trials.
